The Virginia Transit Association presented the following awards at its 2006 Awards Luncheon on May 12th in Alexandria, Virginia to recognize outstanding service by individuals and exceptional transit programs, and to advance and expand public transportation in the Commonwealth. Outstanding Contribution by a Public Official The following public officials are recognized for their leadership and collaboration to create the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority. |

The Honorable John J. McGlennon Vice Chair, James City County John was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1998 and reelected in 2002 and 2005. He currently serves as the President of Williamsburg Area Transport and has been employed since 1974 as Professor of Government at the College of William & Mary.

Gene R. Nichol President, College of William & Mary Gene became the 26th president of the College of William & Mary on July 1, 2005. Before returning to Williamsburg, where he taught two decades ago, he served as Law Dean of the University of Colorado and Dean of Law at the University of North Carolina.

The Honorable Jeanne Zeidler Mayor, City of Williamsburg Jeanne was elected to the Williamsburg City Council in 1994 and became the City's first female mayor in 1998. Prior to City Council service, she served four years on the Williamsburg-James City County Public School Board as both vice chair and chair.

The Honorable Walter C. Zaremba Chair, York County Board of Supervisors Walter was elected to the Board of Supervisors in 1995. Before beginning his legal career in 1993, which has grown into a legal practice specializing in estate planning, Walter proudly served in the U.S. Army, rising though the ranks from private to colonel. While serving in the Army Special Forces (Green Berets), he was a highly decorated officer and Vietnam veteran, receiving the National Distinguished Service Medal and Purple Heart. |

Outstanding Contribution by a Business 
Awarded to: Colonial Williamsburg Foundation
for leadership in the creation of the Williamsburg Area Transit Authority. Through the Foundation's efforts, a unique public/private partnership was forged to create a regional authority that consilidates public transit planning for itself and the Counties of James City and York, the City of Williamsburg, and the College of William and Mary.

Innovative Program Award
Awarded to: Fairfax County Department of Transportation ![]()
for creating the Senior Travel Training Program and addressing the pressing need for alternative transit for a growing elderly population. This training consists of a short term, small group/one-on-one intensive instruction designed to teach older people how to meet their transit needs. A special bus (MAT – Mobile Accessible Travel Training) was modified for training purposes. To implement the program, the FCDOT sought out states with successful similar programs, and also consulted a travel training advocacy organization. A significant number of the targeted group (ages ranging from 50s-80s) have received training and numbers continue to rise.

Outstanding Public Transportation Marketing Award
Awarded to: GRTC Transit System![]()
for breaking new ground in public transportation marketing. The Trip Plannerwas launched on the GRTC website in 2005 to allow riders to easily plan their trip. The new program was promoted through creative television, radio, and print advertisements. As a result visits to the GRTC website increased by 43.86% and ridership increased by 7%.
